PTA SIM Verification System (SVMS) Explained
The SIM Verification and Management System (SVMS) is the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s central database linking every active mobile SIM to the CNIC used to register it. Every licensed mobile operator in Pakistan — Jazz, Zong, Telenor, and Ufone — synchronizes subscriber records with SVMS in real time.
How SVMS Works
- A subscriber's biometric fingerprint and CNIC are captured at the point of sale when a new SIM is issued.
- The operator transmits the CNIC-to-SIM link to PTA's SVMS database.
- SVMS stores this record and makes it queryable through the CNIC holder's own SMS request (668) or the cnic.sims.pk portal.
- When a SIM is deactivated or transferred, the operator updates SVMS so the record stays current.
Why SVMS Exists
PTA introduced mandatory biometric SIM re-verification to curb the use of unregistered or fraudulently registered SIMs in criminal activity. Every mobile connection in Pakistan must be traceable to a verified CNIC holder, and SVMS is the operational backbone that makes that traceability possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. NADRA issues and verifies CNICs. SVMS is PTA’s separate system that links SIMs to CNICs using data operators submit after NADRA verification.
Consumer access to SVMS is provided through the SMS 668 short code and the cnic.sims.pk portal, both linked from pta.gov.pk.
Only PTA, law enforcement under lawful process, and licensed operators for their own subscribers have broader SVMS access.
